Primitive Geometry, 2023

At the turn of September I travelled to the Czech village of Frantoly to take part in the sixth edition of the art symposium organised by the Aleš South Bohemian Gallery, under the curatorship of Dita Pfefer and Miroslav Růžička. As Dita Pfefer outlined in the invitation,  the symposium focused on the reflection of the landscape of the local countryside, its historical specifics and nature scenery. Three other artists participated in the symposium: Rozálie Prokopcová, Nikola Čulík, and Štěpán Blaschko. After my first walk in the forests of Šumava, I came up with a mini series to express an intimate touch of…

EARTH SONG White & Weiss Gallery 10 May - 30 June 2023 Curator: Viktória Popper „Every man must decide whether he will walk in the light of creative altruism or in the darkness of destructive selfishness” – Martin Luther King, Jr. This is the seventh joint exhibition of Tomas Zemla and Andrej Harsany. Despite their international experience and outlook, their main inspiration is the landscape around Trnava where they were both born, living close to each other ever since. They work with the materials found there or persistently capture the scenery of the endless fields. However, their work goes deeper…

Fields in Danubiana

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mSRHtJxJIFg&feature=youtu.beFIELD 25 October – 4 December 2022Danubiana Meulensteen Art MuseumTomáš Žemla is a truly unique phenomenon in the Slovak art.A young artist, blazing his own path without shortcuts, holding firmly to his point of view despite a number of setbacks and disappointments. Recognized and appreciated in the world. His artistic language is original and authentic, expressing his roots and soul. His paintings, although at first glance thematically banal and perhaps mundane to some, are a statement of his family background, influences, knowledge and ideas. And in doing so, they are "just" fields. Yes, fields vast and flat, at different seasons and times,…

FIELD 25 October - 4 December 2022Danubiana Meulensteen Art MuseumThe exhibition of my Light Fields project in the Danubiana Meulensteen Art Museum in Bratislava is an important milestone for the project and for me personally. My paintings are now hanging in a space known as the heart of Danubiana. It is a unique exhibition space with an inner block called the white cube concept, meaning that the viewer is optically located inside a white cube in, or in this case a cuboid. There are no windows or anything in this space that would disturb the exhibition theme. I have been painting fields for…

My late-summer solo exhibition in the Galerie Petr Novotny in Prague features my works from recent years, mostly landscapes, mostly fields.  “In a hypnotic rhythm, the painter covers the whole area of the picture with an uncountable number of tiny colourful lines, layered upon each other, fixing the landscape onto the canvas, at the same time pushing it away from the viewer in a blurred abstraction,” writes curator Jan Čejka. For thirteen years I have been creating my philosophy of the Field, based upon its simple spatial formulation. Using my own building material - the technique of tiny lines, and the half-horizon,…

"Take a look at the video from the recent opening of our exhibition, Zbytočná Revolúcia (Unnecessary Revolution) showing two noted Slovak visual artists Tomáš Žemla and Andrej Haršány. The exhibition has been a success, and we have spent very good time together, talking about art and more. You can visit the exhibition until 25 April 2022 at the Uffo Gallery in Trutnov." "Pozrite si video z našej nedávnej vernisáže výstavy Zbytočná revolúcia dvoch významných slovenských umelcov, maliara Tomáša Žemlu a sochára Andreja Haršányho. Okrem toho, že samotná výstava bola úspešná, strávili sme spolu veľmi fajn čas nielen diskusiou o umení. Výstavu…

Light-fields in Trutnov

My Light-fields series is on display in Uffo gallery in the Czech town of Trutnov as part of a joint exhibition Zbytočná Revolúcia (Unnecessary Revolution) with my friend, sculptor Andrej Haršány. The exhibition is on until April 25.  The Light-Fields series is the umbrella art project that I have been working on since 2019. This project is my most important artistic expression of the way I understand the space of the picture and the way I define it through several key values, regarding both content and technique. The name of the project captures the characteristic attributes of my work: banality…

Art Market Budapest 2021

Art Market Budapest is a major Central and Eastern Europe’s international art fair, with exhibitors from around the whole world. My works appeared there for the first time this year, at the fair’s 11th edition that took place on October 7-10, 2021. It was quite an experience for me after these long months where social events were scarce to attend the fair and be able to present my works in the beautiful building, the Whale, as part of the exhibition by Jan Čejka Gallery together with sculptor Andrej Haršány and painter Jakub Sýkora. Jan Čejka Gallery is a Prague-based gallery mostly focusing…

How my art became part of a winery’s architecture

"Tomáš, here is an idea, is there any way we could transfer your paintings onto the dividers of the toilets in my winery?" Jozef Zvolenský asks on the phone and I sense hesitation in his voice. He could not be sure how I would react - in Slovakia, many people still tend to believe public bathrooms are not a dignified enough place for art.  Jozef Zvolenský and his family have been friends of mine for more than twenty years. They have followed my work practically all through my career and their support has been much appreciated. The beautiful location of…
